At 6:40, I heard tires on gravel.
"Our plan ends tonight."
I recognized the sound of Nathan's car before I saw it. I stood, half ready to give up the game and just walk over to him. Then I heard his voice, and I didn't move.
He was on the phone. He sounded lit up from within.
"Oh, I've waited ten years for this. Finally, I can take back what belongs to me."
I froze against the wall.
I dialed him.
"Our plan ends tonight, so wait for me at midnight where we agreed. I'll bring everything. She still believes every word I say, so this will be easy."
"Once the paperwork clears, she won't be able to stop it. Just be ready."
I pressed my back so hard against the brick that I felt it scrape through my dress.
My phone was already in my hand. I didn't remember pulling it out.
