I Married My High School Sweetheart – On Our 10th Anniversary, I Overheard Him Say, 'Now I Can Finally Take What's Rightfully Mine'

"A surprise, huh? What kind?"

"The kind you have to show up to see, Claire."

I bumped his shoulder. "You're insufferable."

"You married me anyway."

How lucky I'd been to say 'yes.'

Lily thundered down the stairs in her soccer socks, backpack half-zipped, and Nathan scooped her up like she still weighed nothing.

"Daddy, are you taking Mommy somewhere fancy?"

"Very fancy. I might even use a napkin."

Lily giggled into his shoulder, and I watched the two of them and thought, for maybe the thousandth time, how lucky I'd been to say 'yes' to the boy who had promised me a ring at seventeen.

He still called Lily "buttercup."

I noticed, again, that the door to Nathan's home office was locked.

It always was. He said the paperwork from work was sensitive, and I'd accepted that explanation without a second thought.

There were other small things I hadn't pushed on either.
