"The court had finally ruled in my favor."
I swallowed hard.
"I heard you on the phone. You said you'd finally take back what belonged to you."
"My mother's house," he said quietly. "The court had finally ruled in my favor."
"We got it back."
"You also said she'd believed every word you told her."
He let out a slow breath.
"My stepfather's sister. She'd been controlling the property for years. I'd convinced her I was ready to give up my claim, so she'd stop looking for the missing records while Diane searched for proof."
"And when you said, 'Our plan ends tonight'?"
"Because once the paperwork was signed, she couldn't block the transfer or sell the house before we got it back."
"No. Never you. Never us."
I searched his face.
"You weren't talking about me?"
"Claire..." His voice broke. "No. Never you. Never us."
I sank onto the stool across from him.
