I Came Home Early and Found My Pregnant Wife Bleeding in the Dark—Then She Whispered Who Had Been Inside - usnews

For one terrible second, I forgot how to breathe.

The words hung between us in the dark bedroom, thin and impossible.

Your mother brought the doctor.

Lily’s lips trembled after she said it. Her hand stayed locked over the swell of our baby, as if she were trying to hold him inside by force of love alone. Her eyes kept drifting toward the doorway, not toward me, as if she expected my mother to step out of the hallway and finish whatever she had started.

I moved then.

Too late, but I moved.

I grabbed the phone from my pocket and called 911. My voice sounded like it belonged to somebody else. I told the operator my pregnant wife was bleeding, that someone had broken into our apartment, that she was hurt. The operator asked questions. How far along? Was she conscious? Was she breathing normally?

I answered what I could and hated myself for everything I could not.

Lily’s fingers caught my sleeve.

“Don’t let her near me,” she whispered.

“She won’t come near you,” I said.

But even as I said it, I knew how weak those words were. My mother had a key to our apartment. My mother knew our doorman by name. My mother could walk into any room like she owned the air.

I took off my jacket and tucked it around Lily’s shoulders. The silk nightgown was twisted wrong, the pale fabric stained at the hem. I did not let my eyes linger there. I focused on her face, on her breathing, on the faint rise and fall of her chest.
