And then I heard myself say it.
“Would you go with me?”
He looked up.
My face went hot. “I mean— not like— I just mean as my plus-one. You could pretend. To be my boyfriend. Just for the day. Just so I’m not walking in there alone. I know it’s stupid. I know it’s a stupid, pathetic idea. You can say no. Please say no, actually. Forget I asked.”
Edward was quiet for a long moment.
“Okay,” he said.
I stared at him.
“Okay?”
“Okay. I’ll go.”
“Edward. You don’t have to.”
“I know I don’t have to.” He picked up his half of the sandwich. “What time should I pick you up?”
“You’re serious.”
“I’m serious.” He took a bite. Chewed. Swallowed. “One question, though.”
