PART 2
And what Mark saw in those branches made his blood run cold.
Nine meters up, in a wide, sturdy fork of the trunk, lay a human skeleton.
But this was no chaotic scatter of bones dragged around by predators. It had been arranged. The spine lay in a perfectly straight line. The ribs were set side by side, forming the shape of a chest. And on top, resting like a trophy on a pedestal, sat the skull.
The arm and leg bones lay parallel, neat as museum specimens.
One officer who climbed up later called it “a gruesome installation.”
Nearby, on a thick branch, lay two objects: a small folding knife with its blade half-open, and a piece of strong nylon cord, later identified as part of a tent guyline.
The same tent that had never been found.
Dental records confirmed it within days: Logan Mills. The news shook the whole region.
But the forensic team noticed something else.
Two meters away stood a second tree. Deep marks scarred its trunk at heights of two to four meters. Not the parallel grooves of a bear’s claws. These were crushing dents, grouped in threes and fours, as if something had gripped the tree and squeezed. At the center of each dent was a puncture, sharp as a claw.
HE VANISHED IN THE SMOKIES. NINE YEARS LATER, HIS SKELETON WAS FOUND 30 FEET UP IN A TREE… ARRANGED LIKE A MUSEUM DISPLAY
