Dorothy didn’t answer.
Rachel’s voice broke.
“Please.”
Finally Dorothy said, “You are Samuel’s daughter.”
Rachel’s face emptied.
My head snapped toward her.
Samuel’s daughter.
My granddaughter.
Not through Melissa.
Through the son I had never known.
Rachel whispered, “No.”
“I’m sorry.”
“How do you know?”
“You disappeared three weeks before Melissa’s crash.”
Rachel sat down hard.
Dorothy continued.
“Samuel told everyone you ran away. But you didn’t.”
“What happened?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
Rachel started crying.
The phone crackled.
Then Dorothy said the sentence that changed the entire shape of the story.
“Melissa found you.”
Calvin stepped forward.
“When?”
“The night of the crash.”
Dorothy’s voice trembled.
“She was trying to rescue Rachel.”
