A few weeks later, Ben was feeling much better.
And on my birthday, the three of us went to the house I’d dreamed about for so many years.
My father slowly opened the gate.
Ben ran into the yard.
I
stood motionless at the entrance.
The old apple tree my mother had planted was still growing in the garden.
Suddenly, I remembered something she’d said a few months before she passed away.
“Sarah, you can lose everything in life, but never lose the people who love you.”
I turned toward my father.
He was standing beside the gate, older and more tired than I remembered, but smiling.
I hugged him as tightly as I had when I was a little girl.
“Forgive me, Dad. That night, I imagined the most terrible things about you.”
He gently stroked my hair.
“You’re a mother, sweetheart. Your first responsibility is to protect your child. I’m not upset with you.”
