At dinner, my sister threw water on my pregnant wife’s dress and sneered, “Don’t sit there, that’s my spot.” My mom laughed, “Pregnancy makes you clumsy,” while my dad sent her to eat in the kitchen. My wife silently grabbed her coat. I grabbed my keys—and called the travel concierge. “Cancel the first-class flights and VIP Mediterranean cruise resort.” On Monday, my family arrived at the airport with designer luggage. Then security escorted them out.

I had finally cut away the rotting, diseased branches of my family tree, and in doing so, I had ensured that the roots of my own family would thrive in healthy soil. As I rocked my newborn daughter to sleep later that week, sitting in the quiet nursery, my phone vibrated on the side table with a notification from a number I had blocked long ago, forcing me to make one final, defining choice regarding the ghosts of my past…

Chapter 6: The Unassailable Fortress

I looked at the glowing screen of my phone resting on the kitchen counter.

It was a voicemail transcription notification from an unknown number, somehow bypassing my blocked list filters. The system had transcribed the message into text.

It was my mother’s voice.

The transcription read: “Arthur, please. It’s Mom. We are losing the house next month. The bank won’t extend the loan. Vanessa is struggling, she can barely pay for food. We are your family. You are my son. You can’t just leave us to die like this. Please call me.”
