At dinner, my sister threw water on my pregnant wife’s dress and sneered, “Don’t sit there, that’s my spot.” My mom laughed, “Pregnancy makes you clumsy,” while my dad sent her to eat in the kitchen. My wife silently grabbed her coat. I grabbed my keys—and called the travel concierge. “Cancel the first-class flights and VIP Mediterranean cruise resort.” On Monday, my family arrived at the airport with designer luggage. Then security escorted them out.

My father stared at the screen. His mouth dropped open. His brain spectacularly failed to process the apocalyptic magnitude of the information. He looked like a man who had just been told the sun was never coming up again.

“What?! You can’t do this!” he shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched whine. “We are going to Europe! We are your family! You owe us!”

“You told my pregnant wife to walk home in the dark while she stood shivering and crying in pain against your wall, Dad,” I whispered, leaning closer to the camera, ensuring he saw the absolute deadness in my eyes. “You laughed when your thirty-year-old daughter assaulted a woman carrying your grandchild. You worried about the upholstery on a chair I paid for.”

Behind him on the screen, the situation escalated violently.

Two armed airport police officers and a stern-looking terminal manager marched directly up to Vanessa. They grabbed her firmly by the arm as she attempted to throw her designer purse at the airline staff in a fit of rage.
