At dinner, my sister threw water on my pregnant wife’s dress and sneered, “Don’t sit there, that’s my spot.” My mom laughed, “Pregnancy makes you clumsy,” while my dad sent her to eat in the kitchen. My wife silently grabbed her coat. I grabbed my keys—and called the travel concierge. “Cancel the first-class flights and VIP Mediterranean cruise resort.” On Monday, my family arrived at the airport with designer luggage. Then security escorted them out.

I picked up my phone and called my personal attorney.

“Dissolve the trust obligation for the downtown loft immediately,” I ordered, my voice echoing in the quiet study. “Contact the landlord, inform them the guarantor is formally withdrawing support, and authorize them to issue a Notice of Non-Payment and initiate eviction proceedings effective the first of the month.”

“Consider it done, Arthur,” my lawyer replied, sensing the shift in my tone. “And the property taxes on the primary residence?”

“Cease all payments. Let them default.”

Saturday and Sunday passed with bright, mocking, beautiful sunshine.

I didn’t answer a single text or phone call.

Through the perverse voyeurism of their public social media pages, which I monitored from a burner account, I watched my mother and sister boast wildly about their upcoming “VIP European Tour.”

They posted dozens of photos from high-end nail salons, luxury day spas, and designer boutiques. They were blindy, arrogantly swiping the secondary Platinum credit cards—cards tied directly to my primary corporate account—to buy hundreds of dollars of designer sunglasses, resort wear, and expensive luggage.
