A stranger cut in front of my 81-year-old father at airport security and called him a “confused old fellow.” Dad quietly told me to let it go.

He looked down at the little

wings in his palm, and his voice went quiet.

“Some memories don’t become less important with age.”

“What kind of memories?”

Before he could answer, the speakers chimed, and the gate agent’s voice announced that boarding would begin shortly.

Chapter 2: You’re the Man From That Story

Chad Hollenbeck was the first person out of his chair.

When the agent announced that boarding preparations were beginning, he strode to the front of the crowd, ahead of a family with a stroller and an elderly woman with a cane, as though the line had been put there as a personal insult.

Mindy trailed behind him, holding her Birkin against her side.

“Honestly, Dad,” I said, “I don’t think that man knows how to wait for anything.”

My father chuckled.

“People can surprise you, sweetheart.”

“Not that one.”

He didn’t answer.

He only looked down at the keychain.
