Maya sat in the left seat.
Reeves moved aside.
Torres stared.
“You’re going to land it?”
Maya placed her hands on the controls.
“No.”
Torres blinked.
“We are.”
Maya looked at her.
“You’re the commercial pilot.”
Then she smiled.
“I’m just the woman in seat 8A.”
Together, they aligned Flight 417 with the impossible runway.
Five hundred feet.
Three hundred.
One hundred.
Leo sat strapped into the observer seat, holding Aaron’s hand.
“Mom?”
Maya did not look back.
“Yes?”
“Be brave.”
Her eyes filled.
“Always.”
Fifty feet.
Thirty.
Twenty.
The wheels struck the floating runway hard.
The aircraft bounced.
Torres corrected.
Maya held the centerline.
Reverse thrust roared.
The runway rushed beneath them.
Passengers screamed.
Then—
slowly—
Flight 417 stopped.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then the entire cabin erupted.
Applause.
Sobbing.
Laughter.
People hugged strangers.
Torres covered her face with both hands.
Reeves stared at the controls as though he could not believe they were still there.
