A Single Mom Was Napping in Seat 8A—Until the Captain’s Voice Came Over the Intercom: “Is There a Fighter Pilot on This Plane?” - usnews

Reeves suddenly rose.

“No.”

Maya turned.

“What?”

“You can’t go down there.”

“Why?”

For the first time, genuine fear appeared on his face.

“Because that’s where they put the failsafe.”

Maya stared.

“What failsafe?”

Reeves’s voice became almost inaudible.

“A pressure-triggered exp/l/osive device.”

Torres swore under her breath.

Maya’s gaze hardened.

“You knew?”

“I was told nobody would be hurt.”

Maya stepped toward him.

“You redirected an aircraft carrying children across the Atlantic.”

“They said they only wanted Ethan to identify himself.”

“And you believed them?”

Reeves looked ashamed.

“I needed money.”

Maya stared at him.

“For what?”

“My daughter.”

That answer stopped her.

Reeves looked toward the windshield.

“She has a rare heart condition. Experimental treatment. Insurance refused it. The people behind this offered enough money to save her.”

His voice cracked.

“They said Flight 417 would divert safely to the Azores.”

Maya’s anger did not disappear.
