“Maya—”
She grabbed him.
“You know David.”
Adrian glanced at Lucas.
That was answer enough.
“What did he have to do with Icarus?”
Adrian exhaled.
“David Lin was a physician attached to the project.”
Maya’s world tilted again.
“No. He was an emergency-room doctor.”
“After Icarus.”
“Why did he marry me?”
Adrian said nothing.
“Why?”
“To monitor you.”
Lucas stared at them.
Maya whispered, “For how long?”
“Initially? Two years.”
“We were married for eleven.”
“I know.”
“Why did he stay?”
Adrian looked almost sad.
“That part wasn’t in his orders.”
Maya turned away.
Pieces of her life had become classified information.
Her marriage.
Her son.
Ethan.
Even grief itself.
Nothing belonged only to her anymore.
Then the radio crackled.
A new voice appeared.
Not Ethan.
Not air traffic control.
A woman.
Calm.
Older.
“Maya Lin, this is Raven Control.”
Adrian’s face drained of color.
Ethan shouted immediately.
