years.”
“Arthur visited Daniel’s widow tonight.”
The room went silent.
Graham slowly looked at him.
“How do you know that?”
“I saw him.”
“Where?”
“At her home.”
A long pause followed.
Then Graham said, “Why were you at her home?”
Adrian had expected the question.
He still disliked answering it.
“She works for me.”
Graham stared.
“What?”
“Marissa Keane is my housekeeper.”
Something drained from Graham’s face.
He sat down.
For the first time in Adrian’s life, his father looked genuinely stunned.
“She works in your house?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Seven months.”
Graham whispered something Adrian could not hear.
“What?”
His father looked up.
“Does Caroline know?”
“I haven’t spoken to Caroline.”
“Good.”
“Why?”
Graham stood again.
“Listen to me carefully. Whatever you think happened with Daniel, do not turn Marissa into a way of investigating it.”
“I’m not.”
“You followed her home.”
Adrian had no response.
Graham’s voice softened.
