“Who had physical access to it when Anne was alive?” I asked.
“Mrs. Bennett kept it in her study.”
“And after?”
Harrison
hesitated.
“You asked me to gather financial documents for the family office. Claire handled personal files. Daniel took some of Mrs. Bennett’s correspondence.”
“I took her letters,” Claire said. “Not financial papers.”
I stood.
“Call Daniel.”
Claire looked at the clock.
“He’s in Santa Barbara.”
“Then he can join by video.”
She didn’t argue.
Daniel answered her call from what appeared to be a hotel room.
At forty, he looked more like Anne than I did.
Same dark eyes.
Same habit of pressing his lips together when concerned.
He greeted
Claire first.
Then he noticed me sitting beside her.
“Dad.”
“Daniel.”
His expression sharpened.
“What happened?”
Claire looked at me.
I nodded for her to begin.
She told him about Rosa.
The delayed salaries.
The reserve account.
