“Is Peter still managing anything connected to Hawthorne?” I asked.
“No,” Naomi said. “He hasn’t had formal access since Anne died.”
“Then why are payments still being made?”
“The loan was converted into a private note five years ago. The note was assigned to a small investment partnership.”
“Which one?”
“I’ll trace it.”
Harrison finally sat.
“I should have seen this.”
I looked at him.
“Should you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Mrs. Bennett trusted me to watch
the account.”
“You said you only processed transactions.”
“That doesn’t mean I had to stop thinking.”
The echo of his earlier words was unmistakable.
For a moment, none of us seemed eager to blame anyone else.
That was new for my family.
Claire looked at Harrison.
“Did you know Peter had access to Mom’s study?”
“Yes. Often.”
“Could he have used her token?”
Harrison’s expression tightened.
“Possibly.”
Daniel shook his head from the screen.
