A Doctor Married His Passing Patient – But After Her Funeral, Her Sister Handed Him a Box and Said, 'She Wanted You to Have This Only After She Was Gone'

She wiped her face with her sleeve.

We'd both done the right thing.

"And if they let you go back?" Nora asked. "What happens when someone else asks you for something you shouldn't give?"

I started to promise I'd never make that mistake again.

Another reassurance, offered because I wanted her to feel better.

"I'll ask for help before I answer," I said.

"And if they let you go back?"

Nora picked up her phone, then put it down again.

"What you did was wrong. And I'm not deleting the complaint."

"I know."

She opened an email to the person handling the review and began typing.

"What you did was wrong."

She described helping with a wedding she'd understood to be nonromantic. She said she had no direct knowledge that I'd expected an inheritance.

She kept her concerns about the marriage.
