A Doctor Married His Passing Patient – But After Her Funeral, Her Sister Handed Him a Box and Said, 'She Wanted You to Have This Only After She Was Gone'

I braced for a question about the photograph.

I called Nora and asked to meet.

She said she wanted Alicia's scarf and bandage ring returned; she'd put them in the box after the funeral.

"I'll bring them. I also need you to tell the hospital what you actually witnessed."

"I'm not withdrawing my complaint."

"I'm not asking you to."

I called Nora

She agreed to Saturday.

I gathered the keepsakes and copies of the lawyer's notice and my signed refusal.

She invited me into her kitchen. I put the small box between us and opened it so she could see the scarf and ring.

She touched the white fabric, then closed the lid.

She agreed

"I'm not apologizing," she said. "I had every right to complain."

"You did."

Her hand stayed on the box.

"I was her doctor," I said. "I was responsible for my decision. Her asking didn't change that."
