A 16-Year-Old Boy Spent Every Weekend at His Best Friend’s House—Until His Friend’s Mom Called and Asked, “When Is My Son Coming Home? He’s Been Staying at Your House for Weeks!”

We hadn’t spoken since the funeral. Frank had accused me of erasing Michael by hiding his belongings. I’d told him he had no right to judge my grief.

Neither of us had apologized.

I called him twice. No answer.

“Frank, Nathan’s missing. If you’ve heard from him, call me immediately.”

By eleven, Denise and I had contacted the police. At midnight, we sat in my kitchen, wondering what we hadn’t noticed.

Then, at 4:06 a.m., Frank called.

“They’re both here. Safe. My phone was charging in the workshop.”

“Put Nathan on.”

A moment later, my son answered.

“Mom?”

“Are you hurt? Is Cole all right?”

“We’re fine.”

“Then why haven’t you answered your phone?”

He hesitated.

“We saw your messages. We were scared to answer. Grandpa didn’t know we’d turned our phones off.”

“You let us spend the entire night looking for you. Frank’s bringing you home. Now.”
