Heart Attack and Heart Failure Are Not the Same Thing
This distinction is important because viral health posts often mix these conditions together.
A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle becomes blocked or severely reduced.
A heart failure condition means the heart is not pumping adequately to meet the body’s needs.
They are different conditions.
A heart attack can damage the heart and eventually contribute to heart failure, but heart failure can also develop from many other causes.
Heart failure often develops gradually.
Symptoms can include:
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Swollen legs or ankles
- Persistent coughing or wheezing
- Difficulty breathing when lying down
- Sudden weight gain from fluid retention
- Reduced ability to perform everyday activities
A heart attack can develop suddenly, although symptoms can sometimes begin gradually or be relatively mild.
Understanding the difference helps prevent unnecessary panic while still taking genuine warning signs seriously.
