HER FATHER SOLD HER TO A DEAF RANCHER FOR $50—ON THE EIGHTH NIGHT, SHE PULLED A LIVING SECRET FROM HIS EAR AND UNCOVERED THE LIE THAT HAD RUINED HIS LIFE 018

She touched the object.

It tightened.

Gideon jerked.

Rosalie nearly dropped the tweezers.

She steadied herself.

Then pulled.

Nothing.

She tried again.

A little harder.

Suddenly, the object released.

It slid free.

Long.

Black.

And strangely flexible.

It fell into the porcelain bowl.

Rosalie froze.

Gideon stared at her.

Neither moved.

Then the thing curled.

Once.

Twice.

And began to move.

Rosalie slowly backed away.

Gideon stood.

He couldn’t hear the creature.

But he could see it.

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Rosalie looked at him.

“You’ve seen this before.”

Gideon didn’t answer.

She grabbed the notebook.

What is it?

He wrote two words.

Not alone.

Rosalie stared.

“What does that mean?”

He pointed toward the door.

Then toward the darkness outside.

He wrote:

There are more.

PART 3 — THE THING IN THE DARK

Rosalie barely slept.

At dawn, the creature was gone.

The porcelain bowl was empty.
