My Grandkids Went Back Home After Staying with Me All Summer – But While Changing the Sheets on Their Bed, I Found Something Tucked Under the Mattress That Made Me Forget How to Speak

Later, someone mentioned the renovations.

“They’re almost finished,” Adam said too quickly.

Ben stared at his plate.

I almost rescued Adam by changing the subject. Instead, I carried the empty cups inside.

She accepted that answer and ran off.

After everyone left, he followed me inside.

“Mom, can you talk to Ben?”

I put the cups in the sink. “About what?”

“About me and Tara.”

“What do you want me to tell him?”

“That sometimes parents need space.”

“Mom, can you talk to Ben?”

“You want me to explain why you’re living somewhere else.”

“He trusts you.”

“Then tell him yourself while I’m right there.”

Adam frowned. “We haven’t decided how much he needs to know.”

“He already knows enough to be scared.”

I placed the brass key and note on the counter.

“He trusts you.”

Adam stopped moving.

“Where did you get those?”

“Under Ben’s mattress, I told you.”

He grabbed the paper.

Tara had just walked into the kitchen.

Adam looked between us. “He’s had this all summer?”

“Where did you get those?”

I placed Ben’s handwritten list beside it:

  • Dad – red door.
  • Mom – blue mailbox.
  • Grandma – four hours away.

Adam read it.

“He wrote this?”

“He’s been trying to work out where his family lives while the three of us kept pretending he didn’t notice anything.”

“He wrote this?”
