Leo tugged lightly on my sleeve. “Mom, who was Noah?”

I knelt in front of him. “He was your father.”

His face changed in small, careful ways. His eyebrows drew together. His mouth softened. He looked past me toward my parents, then down at the porch boards.

“My dad had a name,” he said.

I nodded, tears burning my eyes. “Yes. He had a name.”

“Did he know about me?”

“He knew I was pregnant.”

Leo swallowed. “Was he happy?”

The question broke something in me.

I pulled him into my arms. “Yes,” I whispered. “He was scared, but he was happy.”

My mother began crying openly then.
