The veterinarian placed an X-ray onto the illuminated board.
She pointed.
There, glowing bright against the image, was a tiny circular shape.
A ring.
Vanessa said nothing.
Mr. Bennett closed his eyes.
Marcus whispered,
“Wow.”
The veterinarian explained that they would determine the safest way to remove it.
But there was no doubt.
Princess had swallowed Vanessa’s missing ring.
The mystery was solved.
Except that wasn’t the question that mattered most anymore.
Everyone now knew I had done absolutely nothing wrong.

I looked directly at her.
