Bell, sat behind his desk holding an ice pack to his forehead.
“He took it.”
“What?”
“The original beneficiary ledger.”
Melissa cursed.
“Why does he need paper records if everything is digital?”
Arthur looked at me.
“Because the trust has one provision no digital copy includes.”
“What provision?”
“A handwritten amendment.”
My father went pale.
“What amendment?”
Arthur looked at him.
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
“Your father added it in 1981.”
My grandfather.
The year Melissa was born.
Arthur opened his desk drawer.
“The original amendment states that if multiple third-generation beneficiaries exist, ownership cannot transfer until all living branches are formally identified.”
Melissa slowly turned toward me.
“Rachel.”
“Yes.”
“And Samuel.”
“Yes.”
Arthur nodded.
“Vance cannot control anything unless he eliminates uncertainty over Samuel’s branch.”
The word eliminate made Melissa stiffen.
Not because of money.
Because of Rachel.
“Where is Samuel?” she asked Dad.
My father hesitated.
Then answered.
