She opened her eyes.
“Samuel.”
Nobody spoke.
Rachel’s father had been part of the scheme.
Yet his own daughter had apparently discovered it.
Dorothy continued.
“Rachel contacted Melissa.”
“Why Melissa?”
“Because Melissa had already been asking questions.”
The two women secretly began copying documents.
Rachel found evidence that the investment group intended to use forged beneficiary consent to gain control of several Grant parcels.
“And Samuel discovered what they were doing,” Calvin said.
“Yes.”
Rachel’s breathing became shallow.
“The car.”
Dorothy watched her carefully.
“What do you remember?”
Rachel pressed both hands to her temples.
“Melissa driving.”
I stopped.
“You were together?”
Rachel looked at me.
“I think so.”
Images were returning now.
“Rain.”
“The quarry road,” Calvin whispered.
Rachel nodded.
“Melissa kept telling me not to look back.”
Her voice changed as memory replaced uncertainty.
“There was a car behind us.”
“Samuel?”
