FOUR HOURS AFTER MY WIFE’S FU.NERAL, MY DAUGHTER TOSSED HER MOTHER’S OLD LEDGER INTO THE TRA.SH AND SAID, “MOM NEVER REALLY HAD ANY MO.NEY”

The first scholarship recipient, a retired factory worker named Bernard Castellano, wrote me a heartfelt letter following his completion of a woodworking certification program the scholarship had funded.

Mr. Doyle,

I never knew your wife personally, though I understand now exactly what she protected all those years ago. I want you to know this scholarship gave me something considerably more valuable than simply new woodworking skills. It gave me purpose again, during a period of my life when I’d genuinely started wondering whether I still had anything meaningful left to contribute.

Thank you, and thank her, wherever she is now, for making this possible.
