He squeezed her hand.

When the final one was cut, Goldie reached up and touched her shoulders.
She shook her head.
Her short hair moved freely around her face.
For one second, she looked shocked.
Then she laughed.
“Dad! Look!”
He was crying openly now.
“I see.”
“It’s so light!”
She shook her head again and everyone in the salon laughed with her.
The long braids were carefully tied together for donation.
Goldie touched them once.
“Mom would like this, right?”
Her father looked at the hair.
Then at his daughter.
“Your mom would like you.”
Goldie went still.
“With long hair,” he continued. “Short hair. Purple hair.
