A Woman Finally Found Her Sister 45 Years After They Were Separated as Children – When They Met, Her Sister Looked at Her and Said, 'I Knew Where You Were All These Years, but There Was a Reason I Couldn't Reach Out'

His eyes widened.

"This is upsetting him," Evelyn said from the foot of the bed, sharp and fast. "We need to end this."

"Why didn't you ever come see me?" Dad asked me, his voice cracking.

"I was told we'd lost touch," I said. "I spent my whole life looking for Grace. I never knew you were alive."

"The past doesn't matter," Evelyn said. "Let's focus on..."

"Why didn't you ever come see me?"

"Why did he believe I was dead?" I asked her.

"I was given incorrect information."

"No," Grace said. "You knew my sister was alive. You told me Dad didn't want to hear about her. And you told him she was dead. You kept us from even asking each other the truth."

"When he started looking for the girls again, he talked about moving, spending money, doing whatever it took," Evelyn said. "We'd finally built a life together. I wasn't going to lose it."

"I was given incorrect information."

I watched my father's face.

He looked at his wife, truly looked, and something dawned in him slowly, like a light coming on in a faraway house.

Evelyn saw it too. She whirled on Grace.

"After everything I've done for you. I'll cut you out. You'll have nothing."

I held my breath.

Something dawned in him

"I was afraid you'd keep me from him," Grace said quietly. "So I stayed silent while my sister spent her life looking for me. I'm not doing that again."

"Leave with me. Now."

Grace took my hand.

"No," she said. "You already took my sister away from me once. I'm not leaving her again."

I squeezed her fingers so hard I probably bruised them.

"Leave with me. Now."

"Evelyn," Dad said. His voice was thin but clear. "Did you know she was alive?"

"I thought if he knew she was alive, he'd leave everything to find her. I did it for our marriage."

"That isn't what I asked."

"You had no right," my father said, "to decide whether I could know my own children."

"I'm your wife," she said, and her voice finally broke.

"I want to spend time with my daughters. Please go."

"Did you know she was alive?"

She refused.

The nurse stepped forward and asked her gently to wait outside. Evelyn looked at all of us, furious, shaking, smaller somehow.

Then she left.

The door clicked shut. The room breathed out.

"Tell me about your life," Dad said, and I did.

Then she left.

"Did you ever try to find us?" I asked. I had to know.

"I found out about the adoptions too late," he said. "I tried the agencies, but I couldn't get your new names. Grace found me years later. Evelyn said you'd died before Grace could reach you."

His hand found mine.

"I should have kept asking questions. I'm so sorry."

There were questions I still needed answered. But he was exhausted, and Grace was beside me. We could ask them another day, hopefully.

"Did you ever try to find us?"
