voice softened.
“I’m sorry it took me so long to call.”
Adrian stepped closer.
The recording crackled.
“What Daniel discovered was not stolen money, and it was not an engineering fraud. He misunderstood that part at first.”
Another pause.
“The truth concerns why the Keanes and the Whitmores stopped speaking after 1988.”
Marissa held the phone tighter.
Then came the final sentence.
“Before you bring Adrian to Arthur, ask him one question for me.”
Adrian barely breathed.
The woman continued.
“Ask Adrian why Edmund Whitmore left half of the original waterfront property not to his sons…”
